Brocks Gap Heritage Day

April 20 @ 10:00 am - 4:00 pm

Peggy's War - One woman's effort to protect resistors during the Civil War

This year’s Brocks Gap Heritage Day will feature a special program about a different aspect of the local Civil War that affected Brethren and Mennonites, drawn from Karl Rhodes’s new book, Peggy’s War. To learn more, visit

Karl wrote this novel about the true experiences of his great-great-grandmother, Peggy Rhodes, of Rockingham County. She hid draft resisters in her cellar and sent them on their way west when a guide was available. It’s a novel only in the sense that he created dialog. The basic facts of the book are true and are covered in 500 footnotes!Karl will speak about this underground railroad for draft resisters at my Heritage Day, April 20, at 11 a.m. at J. Frank Hillyard Middle School, 226 Hawks Hill Drive., Broadway, VA. The event is free and open to the public from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Karl Rhodes’ talk will be of special interest to Brethren, Mennonites, and those interested in Civil War history. It will focus on the paths that the resisters took across the mountains on their way west and north. (As a bonus, attendees can view 180+ posters of old photos about the history of Brocks Gap and talk with other local historians.)
